Winter in Canada often locks you indoors for at least 6 months of the year with grey skis and bone chilling temperatures that the best stews and fires can’t warm. When its -30 C and your key snaps off in your front door’s dead bolt (honestly happened last week), you wonder how and why people ever settled here to begin with. But I think I know why, as much as the cold tells me other wise. It was for the adventure of it.
If you’re like me and work behind a desk and live in a climate that doesn’t beg you to come outside half the year, you miss adventure. Going places you’ve never been and connecting with creation in ways that you don’t get from pictures or videos on a screen. In January all I want to do is get my hand in the dirt and feel the earth.
But I can’t complain. It is mild day out today, rainy but above zero and we’re counting down the days till spring. I came across this video and it got me excited for this year’s adventures in the woods with my wife and kids. I love this line: “It’s almost as if the wild was designed as a proving ground for men.” Adventures await, don’t forget to go on them!
